Dear Cooper Family,I am so saddened to hear of Derek’s passing. He had such a joyful spirit that it was impossible to feel blue in his presence. I enjoyed telling my freshmen “Mr. Cooper” stories as they would clamor to hear about his capers as a student during his senior English class at James Wood. The students adored him. Derek was a good role model and worked hard to get even the most withdrawn or difficult students to focus on something positive in their lives. He also was a good friend and peer who brightened our table during many lunch periods this year. I will miss Derek. My prayers are with all of his family and friends. I know the grief must be incredible because he was so beloved. With sympathy,Karen Contreras

Terry and Cindy, I am so sorry for the loss of Derek. We only knew him for a brief time but we knew he was a special person from the moment we met him. Noah said he learned more from Derek in one hour than he learned from his math teacher all year. Derek expressed true compassion to our family when my husband passed away. I will always remember his beautiful smile and how he helped our son learn math. I pray for the love of Jesus to wrap His Arms around your family and keep you close. If you ever need anything please call me. Love in Jesus, Renee, Noah and Morgan Wibly
Derek, you were my older brother. We worked together for over 5 years, and the only person at WMC and the Winchester Royals that I looked forward to seeing everyday. You were more than a friend to me. I will never forget singing "kiss from a rose," with you, never forget hugging each other every time we saw each other and not being able to get our arms around each other, and never forget everything you taught me. You helped me find my confidence, you paved the way for me multiple times in all aspects of life, were my accountabillabuddy when it came to youth group, and just an inspiration for me to do the best I could, even if the place I was stuck at didn't deserve it. Once you left the hospital, everyone told me how alike we were, and often times confused us for big/little brother. Not in blood, but in the journey of life, they weren't wrong. I'll never say goodbye, because that implies I'll never see you again. I will, one day, at the end of my days, we'll be reunited, and you'll have once again paved the way for me..to heaven. And instead of it being temporary, this time, it will be permanent. And we will continue to laugh and live for all eternity.Thank you doesn't cover it, I love you isn't big enough. I will live everyday in your memory. I will be strong, because that is what you taught me to do. I will lead fearlessly, and I will live everyday like your still here with me. Because you are, in so many ways.Rest easy my brother.

Derek always had a smile on his face. He tutored Landon this year and came to the house once a week. He loved grabbing dinner after tutoring. The boys that he coached looked up to him and could joke with him. My family sends prayers to his family and friends. Please know that he made a difference.

Derek was a very close friend and college roomate, of my only nephew Zach Grant. Having met him at Shepherd games and several other events, it was evident that he was a very special young man. Though I don't know his family they, are in my prayers for comfort, and may God Bless this special young man who touched lives in a way that few of us ever will. His spirit surely lives on,Terri Beach
