Derek Alan Cooper

Derek Alan Cooper, 25, of Falling Waters, West Virginia, died Thursday, June 7, 2012, in Martinsburg City Hospital.

Mr. Cooper was born in 1987, in Martinsburg, West Virginia, the son of Terry A. and Cynthia J. Cooper of Winchester, Virginia. He was a graduate of James Wood High School, Class of 2005 as well as Shepherd University, Class of 2011. Mr. Cooper was employed as a math teacher and football coach at James Wood High School in Frederick County. Derek was down to earth and trusted by others; he had a real heart for people. He could light up a room with his warm smile and ability to find the good in everyone. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He was passionate about football with the James Wood High School Colonels, the Green Bay Packers and West Virginia Mountaineers. Mr. Cooper attended Fellowship Bible Church and possessed a strong faith in Christ.

Surviving with his parents, is his maternal grandfather, Willard Johnson of Lovettsville, Virginia; paternal grandmother Jane Cooper of Purcellville, Virginia; and his fiancé, Jenna Elizabeth Sprague as well as many aunts , uncles, cousins and many close friends.

He is preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Catherine Johnson, paternal grandfather, Ed Cooper and uncle, Jim Johnson.

A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday at Fellowship Bible Church with Pastor John Morrison officiating. Private interment will be in Lovettsville Union Cemetery, Lovettsville, Virginia.

The family will receive friends on Sunday from 3:00-6:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

Memorial contributions may be made to James Wood Athletic Association, 161 Apple Pie Ridge Road, Winchester, Virginia 22602.

Derek, you were my older brother. We worked together for over 5 years, and the only person at WMC and the Winchester Royals that I looked forward to seeing everyday. You were more than a friend to me. I will never forget singing "kiss from a rose," with you, never forget hugging each other every time we saw each other and not being able to get our arms around each other, and never forget everything you taught me. You helped me find my confidence, you paved the way for me multiple times in all aspects of life, were my accountabillabuddy when it came to youth group, and just an inspiration for me to do the best I could, even if the place I was stuck at didn't deserve it. Once you left the hospital, everyone told me how alike we were, and often times confused us for big/little brother. Not in blood, but in the journey of life, they weren't wrong.
