Dennis Elvin Brookshire, 74, of Winchester, VA, was called home to be with his Lord on Friday, May 5, 2017.
Mr. Brookshire was born in 1943 in Franklin, North Carolina, the son of the late James H. and Laura Brookshire. He graduated from Franklin High School with the class of 1961. He was a veteran having served in the United States Army achieving the rank of Sergeant. Dennis was an active and devoted member of the Hayfield Assembly of God Church in which he served in many capacities including Deacon, Trustee and his most recent work with the fellowship hall. He spent many years building custom homes as a self-employed contractor.
Dennis was a loving father, grandfather and friend to so many. He can be forever remembered for his love of faith, family and the great outdoors where he was an avid hunter. He was passionate about his custom woodworking, the Washington Redskins, NASCAR and his toy poodles, especially his most recent faithful companion “Frosty”. Dennis’s family will always cherish his memory with his love of any and all food, but especially eating out whenever possible and of course his Diet Pepsi. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Mr. Brookshire is survived by his daughter, Michelle Johnson and her husband Chris, of Holly Springs, North Carolina; son, Scott Brookshire and his wife Jessica, of Winchester, Virginia; six grandchildren; Nathaniel, Alexis, Keagan, Kellan, Kiernan, and Asher; Dennis was one of 12 children and his remaining sisters are Virginia, Barbara and Ivy, as well as many extended family members and close friends.
Mr. Brookshire was preceded in death by his son, Joseph “Jay” Brookshire, as well as eight brothers and sisters.
A Memorial service will be conducted on Friday at 3:00 PM with Pastor Don Stotler officiating at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel where Dennis’s family will receive friends from 2:00 PM until the time of service. A reception will follow at Omps Reception Center, Amherst Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Dennis may be made to Hayfield Assembly of God Building Fund, 5118 Northwestern Pike, Gore, Virginia 22637.
