Demo John Sempeles, 92, of Winchester, Virginia went to be with the Lord on Friday, September 29. He passed away at home surrounded by his family.
Demo was born in 1931 in Winchester, the son of John and Lillian Sempeles. He graduated from John Handley High School, Class of 1949, where he was on the football team and later inducted into the Handley Football Hall of Fame. Upon graduation, Demo proudly joined the Marine Corps to serve his country. After leaving the military, Demo married the love of his life Sophie. They were happily married for 66 years and raised a beautiful family together.
Demo and his brother George owned & operated two businesses (Crystal Restaurant/Brothers II & Community Food Store). They also delighted the Winchester community with their homemade candy at Easter and Christmas.
Demo was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. His sense of humor was beyond compare and made everyone laugh with his real life stories. He was always the life of the party. He loved working in his garden and was an avid deer hunter. He loved his church and spent many hours working in the kitchen at the Greek festival.
Surviving with his wife are his children, John Sempeles (Anna), Lillian Funk (Gary), and Maria Rinaldi (James); his grandchildren, Michael, Sophia, Lauren, Joey, Jack, Ava and Gianna and his sister Cia Gretes. He was predeceased by his parents, his sisters Freda and Helen, and his brothers Bill, George and Nick.
The family will receive friends from 10-11am on Friday, October 6th at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Followed by a funeral service at 11:30am at the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Greek Orthodox Church. Interment at Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester Virginia.
