David Steven Spurling, 72, of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia passed away Friday, April 27, 2018, at the Hospice of the Panhandle, Kearneysville, West Virginia. He had fought with cancer and Lyme disease in his later years, but finally lost the battle to a lung disease, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
Mr. Spurling was born in 1945 near Asheville, North Carolina and lived in many places, the son of the late Everett and Margaret Spurling of Bethesda, Maryland. He chose West Virginia for his retirement, a place he truly loved for its beauty. Mr. Spurling graduated from Walter Johnson High School in Rockville, Maryland and took additional courses at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. For the next twelve years he worked as a musician, playing electric bass in many different bands across three states and Washington, DC. When fame and fortune proved to be too elusive he entered the construction and maintenance trades, eventually achieving a Maryland statewide master electrician’s license. Mr. Spurling loved hunting, fishing, camping, canoeing, strumming and singing around the campfire, karaoke, and tinkering around the house. He enjoyed spending time with his hunting buddies, Jimmy Smith, Larry Weyer, and Mike Jones. Mr. Spurling was a member of the Winchester Eagles and the NRA.
Surviving is his loving wife, Judy Clark Spurling; a very special step-granddaughter, Haven Braithwaite, who he helped raise; sister, Diana Spurling of Georgetown, Washington, DC; brother, Norman Spurling (Nancy Tresp) of Alexandria, Virginia; stepdaughter, Janice Braithwaite of Winchester, Virginia; stepson, James Braithwaite of Winchester, Virginia; and a very special mother-in-law, Frances Clark of Winchester, Virginia. Frances always prepared him his two favorite foods “deviled eggs & cucumber and onions”.
At his request, he will be cremated and all services will be private. Arrangements are being handled by Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
Memorial contributions in David’s memory may be made to any local organization that helps the homeless.
