David R. Smith, 92 of Stephens City, VA, passed away, surrounded by his loving family, on Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at English Meadows in Stephens City, VA.
David was born in 1931 in Easton, ME, the son of the late Earl and Lillian Smith. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree and went on to earn his Master’s Degree in Science/Agriculture Economics and Farm Management, both from the University of Maine-Orono. David served our country in the United States Army, as part of an artillery brigade in Austria during the Korean Conflict. He had a long career with the Farmers Home Administration (USDA), working extensively at the Island Falls, ME office and then retiring from the Washington D.C. National Office. David and his wife lived in Houlton, ME, Burke, VA, and Maryville, TN, before moving to Stephens City. He enjoyed fly fishing, bird hunting and being outdoors. David also enjoyed Western movies and was an avid reader, his favorite author being Clive Cussler.
While briefly working in New Hampshire, David met Maria Johanna Penaska, by sheer chance and she would become the love of his life. They married on December 11, 1965, in Richmond Hill, NY. She preceded him in death on February 23, 2023.
David is survived by his loving sons, Brian Smith (Susan) of Houston, TX, Kevin Smith (Michelle) of Stephens City, VA; his beloved grandchildren, Nicholas Smith of Charlottesville, VA, Christopher Smith of Houston, TX, Tyler Smith of Stephens City, VA, Ashley Smith of Stephens City, VA, and his younger sisters, whom he deeply cherished, Nancy Shaw of Bar Harbor, ME and Gail Noyes of Gouldsboro, ME.
Services for David will be private.
