David J. André, 82 years old, died on January 7, 2025.
David was born on June 20th, 1942, and raised in Clarksburg, WV, the son of Ruby and Oscar André. He is preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Nancy André Hatton and Marcia Elise André. He is survived by his three sons, David Christian André of Oldsmar, FL; Justin D. André of Windham, ME, granddaughters Juna André and Anya André; Robert N. André of Mt. Isa, New Zealand (Marion Rouxel); and two grandsons, Jules André and Abel André.
After attending the public schools of Clarksburg, David graduated from Washington & Lee University, both undergraduate and law school. He clerked for a federal district judge and then became a partner in the law firm Kuykendall, Hall and Whiting, which he subsequently left and formed the firm which became André, Rabun and Fowler. He practiced law in Winchester, VA until 1993 when he moved to Kansas City, MO. In Kansas City he practiced law and wrote curricula and taught entrepreneurial classes for The Kaufman Foundation. He returned to Winchester in 2013 and had a limited office practice as a sole practitioner. He was a former president of the Winchester Frederick County Bar, a lecturer and writer for the Continuing Legal Education Committee of the Virginia State Bar. He was admitted to practice in the United States Supreme Court, the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals, The United States District Courts for Eastern and Western Virginia and the Supreme Courts of Virginia, West Virginia and Missouri.
David served in the United States Army, including a tour in Vietnam in 1969 –
1970, rose to the rank of Captain and was awarded the Bronze Star. He has been a long-time member of the Winchester Host Lions Club where he was President twice, Lion of the Year and a Melvin Jones Fellow. He served on many charitable Boards of Directors both in Winchester and Kansas City, including First Night Winchester, Winchester Together, Inc., Operation Breakthrough and Family Promise, and Northern Shenandoah Valley. He was a member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church.
He served two different times on the City of Winchester Board of Zoning Appeals.
Described by many as a bon vivant, David was a motor racing fan and participant as a tire specialist crew member for several different automobile racing teams in NASCAR Winston Cup, Indy Car, IMSA GT and Trans AM. David and then resident of Winchester John Huber formed The Big Apple Corvette Racing team which competed internationally in the SCCA Trans Am series. He was also an avid sailor, primarily ocean sailing, including several small boat sails from San Diego, CA to La Paz, Mexico and from Cabo San Lucas, Mexico to Hilo, Hawaii. David made 18 charter trips to the Caribbean where he introduced family and friends to sailing in paradise.
There will be a family visitation on Monday, January 20, 2025, from 6pm to 8pm at
Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. The memorial service will be held the following day Tuesday, January 21, 2025 at 3pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Pastor Jason Duley will officiate.
