Darryl Lee Heikes, 79, of Frederick County, Virginia passed away Wednesday, September 19, 2018, at Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Heikes was born in 1938 in Kansas, the son of the late Lawrence and Mildred Heikes and stepson of the late Helen Heikes. He graduated from Kansas State University, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism. Mr. Heikes was a photo journalist for 57 years, having worked for United Press International, Associated Press, and retiring from U.S. News and World Report. He was a member of White House News Photographers Association and attended Braddock Street United Methodist Church. Mr. Heikes was an avid fisherman and bird hunter, such as turkey, quail, and duck. He loved spending time with his family, but his greatest passion was being a grandfather and spending time with the grandchildren.
He married Claudia Dell Moore on February 14, 1964 in Dallas, Texas.
Surviving with his wife is a daughter, Deidre Williams (Thomas) and a son, Derek Heikes (Kim Bemis); and grandchildren, Alexa and Victoria Williams.
Mr. Heikes was preceded in death by a grandson, Thomas Williams, III.
Services will be at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Darryl’s memory to a charity of donor’s choice.
