Daniel J. “Dan” O’Donnell

Daniel Joseph “Dan” O’Donnell of Frederick County, Virginia, died Sunday, December 11, 2011 in Leesburg, Virginia.

Dan was born in 1978, in Elgin, Illinois. He was a restaurant manager.

Surviving is his mother and step-father, Betty and Raymond O’Donnell of Winchester, Virginia, son, Luke Daniel Monaghan of Centreville, Virginia; and sister, Kate O’Donnell Diaz of New York, New York. One sister, Amy O’Donnell preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be conducted at 7:00 PM on Thursday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Father Stanley J. Krempa officiating. Interment will be private.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, prior to the service from 5:00-7:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made for benefit of (FBO) Luke Daniel Monaghan Scholarship Fund. Contact: Brandon Long at 703-955-2734 with questions.

Dan- I really miss you, and I hope you know how much I looked up to you...always. When I was little and visiting you in Jersey, I remember you went to an amusement park with your friends. You brought me home a ceramic unicorn piggy bank that you won for me. For the next several years, I was obsessed with unicorns and had to have unicorns on all my notebooks and folders for school all because of my Big Cousin Dan. When I was about 12, you bought me a bracelet with the nickname you gave me (which I will not divulge in a public forum! ;) ), and I wore that bracelet everyday until it finally fell apart. As an adult, when you visited me in Chicago, Andy was fairly new in my life. You insisted on having a private conversation with him where you grilled him about his intentions; Andy says that he was more nervous to meet you that day than he was to meet my dad! I knew since he had your approval, he must be a pretty great guy. Thank you for always looking out for me and being my "coolest" cousin- something you were never shy about reminding me of! ;) I love you and hope that you rest in peace.

I will always cherish the fun memories we've shared. I'll never forget singing and putting on "plays" at Christmastime in CT, swimming in the pool in Manorville, always eventful graduation parties and in recent years our sometimes heated (but friendly) political debates. I can't ever look at a NY Post without thinking of you. Though we may have disagreed about politics (big time!) and we may have drifted apart in recent years, I never stopped caring about you and loving you as my cousin.
