Damaris O. Whitacre
Mrs. Damaris Omps Whitacre, age 97, of Cross Junction, VA, died Saturday, March 31, 2012, at Winchester Medical Center.
Mrs. Whitacre was born in 1914 in Bloomery, WV, the daughter of the late John William and Tennie Omps. She was a former owner of Shawnee Springs Canning in Cross Junction. She was a member of Redland United Methodist Church, the Ladies Society, and the Women’s Auxiliary of the Virginia Horticulture Society.
She married George B. Whitacre on September 12, 1934. Mr. Whitacre died on April 9, 1997.
Surviving is a son, William Lee Whitacre and wife, Joan, of Whitacre, VA; two granddaughters, Deborah Ritter of Poolesville, MD and Lisa Johnson of Winchester, VA; six great grandchildren: Christopher Ritter and wife, Rebecca of Gainesville, VA, Kyle Johnson of Montana, Kathryn Ritter of Atlanta, GA, and Scott Johnson, Alex Johnson, and Kara Johnson, all of Winchester; one great, great granddaughter, Mikaela Ritter of Gainesville, VA, and a sister, Nina Hovermale of Winchester, VA. A sister, Hilda Pugh, and four brothers, Voyne B. Omps, John P. Omps, Hershel Omps, and Raymond Omps, preceded her in death.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Ritter, Scott Johnson, Alex Johnson, Kyle Johnson, John E. Omps, David Whitacre, Larry T. Omps, Steve Lineweaver, and Harold (Jennings) Omps.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M. on Tuesday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel, with Reverend Michael Kendall and Reverend Jack Julcher officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, Whitacre, VA. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Mrs. Whitacre’s honor be made to Redland United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 605, Cross Junction, VA 22625.
