Coleen Theresa (McNamara) Benedett, 69, of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 8th, 2026.
Born on Christmas Eve in Hanover, Pennsylvania, on December 24th,1956, Coleen was the daughter of Irene M. (Holtel) McNamara and the late Leo C. McNamara. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Notre Dame and dedicated her career to healthcare as a Microbiologist in hospital laboratories prior to her retirement.
A women of deep faith & community spirit, Coleen was a devout member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church. She shared her gifted alto voice via the talented choir at weekly masses as well as special holiday programs. She expressed her love to family and friends with beautiful, crocheted blankets.
Coleen volunteered countless hours for the non-profit, Neighbor to Neighbor agency where she provided services to support the independence and well being of homebound adults. In addition, she provided significant administrative support to the agency.
Recently, she volunteered her time to 6 families via Patriot Hospice. There she provided reassurance to those at end of life as well as care to the families.
Coleen is described by her friends and family as generous, kind and a loving individual. She always greeted you with a smile and listened when she inquired, “How is your day going?”
Coleen was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 30 years, Frank Kevin Benedett, as well as her brother, Leo McNamara, nephew Patrick Kennedy and mother and father in-law, Thomas and Mary Ann Benedett.
She is survived by her loving mother, Irene M. McNamara of Middletown, NY; her sisters, Anne Slosky (David) of Nashville, TN, Bridget McNamara-Fenesy (Jeff) of Portland, OR, Kate Smith (Dave) of Fort Myers, FL, Mary McNamara of Manchester, CT, Kelly Kennedy (Pat) of Middletown, NY, Celeste O’Neill (Brian) of Hyattsville, MD, and Jane Taylor (Glenn) of Pine Bush, NY; her brother, Joe McNamara (Meg) of Washington, DC; her sisters-in-law, Liz Randolph, Yardley, PA, Cathy Decker-McNamara, Williamstown, NJ, Kathryn Benedett Lupoli (Robert), Potomac MD, Jean Benedett-Matich (Nicholas), McLean, VA, and Karen Greenzaid (Michael), Potomac, MD. As well as her nieces and nephews, Laura Slosky, Matt Slosky (Katie) Ryan Slosky, Celeste McNamara (Ross), Devon Fenesy, Chalie Smith (Alex), Clare Smith, Kayleen O’Halloran (Mike), Meghan Coleman, Brendan Kennedy, Bridget O’Neill, Kiera O’Neill, Tyne McNamara, Callie McNamara, Elly Taylor, Jack Taylor, Nicholas Matich (Elise), Emily Matich Duffy (Patrick), William Lopoli, Alexandra Greenzaid and Nathaniel Greenzaid as well as numerous great nieces & great nephews.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026, from 1pm to 2pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with a Mass of Christian Burial to be Celebrated at 2pm at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church. Officiating will be Father Mark Mullaney. Interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery.
