Clarence “Trip” Chewning, III, 77, of Middletown, Virginia, died peacefully on Saturday, February 2, 2019, at his home.
Mr. Chewning was born in 1941 in Richmond, Virginia, the son of the late Dr. Clarence C., Jr. and Louise T. Chewning. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, Virginia. Trip then graduated from Hampden-Sydney College in 1966 and Shenandoah College School of Nursing in 1986. He received the Algernon Sydney Sullivan award for character and leadership from both institutions. Trip was a trust officer at F&M Bank for many years. At the age of 43 he embarked on a new career in behavioral health nursing, retiring from Winchester Medical Center after many years of service. Trip was a lifetime member of Middletown Volunteer Fire and Rescue, where he was treasurer for 25+ years. He also served as finance chair on the Middletown Town Council and was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church in Winchester. His gentle and giving nature, love for friends and community and ever present kindness were an inspiration for all of those lucky enough to have known him.
He married Susan Rae Owings on June 24, 1967 in Middletown, Virginia.
Surviving with his wife of 51 years are sons, C. Conway Chewning, IV and wife, Kathy Cromartie, and Patrick L. Chewning and fiancé, Dorian Brown; grandsons, Keller and Quinn Chewning; sister, Patricia Young (William Young, Jr.); and brothers, Thomas Chewning (Nancy) and Robert Chewning (Anne), all of Richmond, Virginia.
The family wishes to thank Blue Ridge Hospice for their wonderful care during his final weeks.
The family will receive friends from 6 pm to 8 pm on Friday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, 26 West Boscawen Street, Winchester, Virginia with Rev. Martha Miller Sims officiating. Interment will be at a later date in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Middletown, Virginia.
