Cindia Davis Stewart, 67, of Winchester, Virginia, peacefully passed away on Tuesday, June 18, 2024, with her family by her side. Cindia was born in Winchester to Carson “Frank” Davis and Etta Roberson Davis on December 31, 1956.
A graduate of Shenandoah College and Conservatory of Music with a degree in Mathematics, she started her teaching career at James Wood High School. She then earned a Master’s Degree from Shippensburg University and transitioned to teaching at the university level. In 2002, she obtained a PhD in Mathematics Instruction and Curriculum from the University of Virginia. During her 31-year tenure at Shenandoah, she served as a professor, department chair and eventually associate dean for the College of Arts and Sciences. Upon retirement, Cindia was awarded the distinction of Professor Emerita which recognized her significant contributions to and successful career at the university.
In addition to teaching, Cindia was involved with her community in numerous capacities. As a member of First Presbyterian Church, she served on Session and was deeply involved with projects related to hunger relief in her local community and abroad. Cindia was part of the P.E.O. sisterhood, a philanthropic organization devoted to providing educational opportunities for women. She was also a trustee for the board of Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury.
As a lifelong learner, Cindia took on intellectual pursuits throughout her life and especially enjoyed investing in new hobbies and passions during retirement. She was an apiarist, carefully managing twelve beehives at the shared family farm. Additionally, she was a certified yoga teacher at Shine Yoga Studio. She had a particular calling to help people of all abilities experience yoga and enjoyed guiding gentle flow and chair yoga classes.
Surviving her is beloved husband of 43 years, Bill Stewart; daughter, Jessica Kelly (James); brother, Glen Davis (Vicki); and sister, Kay Frye. She was a proud aunt to her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents.
A celebration will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Winchester, VA on Saturday, July 20 at 11:00 am, followed by a reception at Buck Hill Farm.
