Cheryl Lynne Layman, 74 of Winchester, VA, passed away on Sunday, February 22, 2025, at Blue Ridge Hospice Inpatient Care Center.
Cheryl was born in 1952 in Washington D.C., the daughter of the late Paul and Shirly McMurray. She retired in 2024 from American Woodmark as an Accounts Receivable Analyst. Cheryl was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd where she was on the Board of Directors and belonged to the Disciples Class. She loved singing and praising her God and was a true and dedicated disciple. Cheryl was a very talented seamstress and could craft anything. She was also very intelligent and had a quick wit, was an avid reader, and a trivia master. She also enjoyed listening to country and gospel music. Cheryl was always there for everyone, and her laughter and joy was contagious. More than anything, she was a devoted mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her daughter, Christina Smith (James); stepson, Toby Layman (Heather); grandchildren, Jason Layman, Brian Layman, Tara Clapperton, Travis Layman, Teather Stotelmyer, Tyler Clark, Taylor Smith, Zachary Clark, Riley Alger and Trevor, Tevin, Tyler, and Tegan Layman; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Karen Merriman, Kathleen Terry, Nancy Acheson; brother, John McMurray and her canine companion, Lady Belle.
In addition to her parents, Cheryl is preceded in death by her husband, Dennis Leroy Layman; daughter, Alana Alger; stepson, Kenny Layman and brother, Paul McMurray.
A service will be held to celebrate the life of Cheryl on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at 2pm at Church of the Good Shepherd with a time of food and fellowship to follow. Officiating will be Pastor Vernon Bray.
