Charles “Charlie” Scott Marple, 9, of Winchester, VA passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, December 30, 2023. He was born March 13, 2014 in Winchester, the son of Scott and Stacy Marple.
Charlie was a fourth-grade student at Indian Hollow Elementary School where he had the honor of being appointed the Schools Resource Officer. He enjoyed working alongside the schools other Resource Officer, Deputy Derek Kniceley. If you ask Deputy Kniceley, he and Charlie worked well together but even he will admit Charlie was the boss. However, many good memories were made that will be cherished forever and everyone at Indian Hollow held a special place in his heart, especially all his classmates and his teacher Mrs. Linaburg. Charlie loved playing baseball and enjoyed his time on the Wild Hogs and Winchester Wolves Baseball Teams. The time he spent with his teammates and coaches meant the world to Charlie. He and his family are so thankful for those times and memories. This past fall, he was even signed by the Shenandoah Hornets Baseball Team as a Five Star Recruit.
Charlie also was the Honorary Manager for the James Wood High School Volleyball Team and would occasionally be the Flagger at the Start/Finish Line at the Winchester Speedway. Above all else, Charlie’s greatest joy came when he was deputized as an Honorary Deputy Sergeant with the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office Unit #621. Charlie loved Law Enforcement and absolutely loved his Law Enforcement family. However, his favorite part of the job was being able to use the handcuffs. Anybody who knew Charlie knew they better watch out because he was not afraid to cuff you and leave you there for a while. He would often talk about wanting to be a Police Officer when he got older and that is a true testament to his Frederick County Sheriff’s Office family. Each and every one of you hold a special place in not only Charlie’s heart…but his families as well.
In addition to his jobs, Charlie also loved doing anything that dealt with being outdoors. Those activities included hunting, fishing, swimming, target shooting, riding his Go Kart, racing his Four Wheeler, and riding horses. You could always find Charlie playing Pokemon, cracking jokes, harassing his older brother Dante, watching Walker Texas Ranger and old Western movies. He especially loves his favorite show, Bonanza. He loves old muscle cars and even has his own 68’ Camaro. He was never afraid to speak what he felt and as those who know him were well aware of his way with words.
In addition to his loving parents Scott and Stacy, Charlie is also survived by his brothers Dante Fox and Kenneth Barnhart IV; his sisters Hayleigh Luft, Katilyn Brannon and Brandi Marple; maternal grandparents Edward and Kathleen Zohlman; godparents Allen and Brandi Brannon; his adopted grandmother Virginia Long; his canine partner in crime Goldie; many aunts, uncles, cousins; and his dear, kind and loving Law Enforcement Family, Deputy Derek Kniceley, Deputy Charlie Roy, First Lieutenant Jason Cornwell, Deputy Sam Ricketts, Sheriff Lenny Millholland and the entire Frederick County Sheriff’s Office. Charlie absolutely loved his “Chosen” family and he truly cherished every moment he was able to spend with them. If you made it into Charlie’s “Inner Circle” (you know who you are), then you know how special it was to be part of his adventures and how special you were to Charlie.
Charlie was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Edgar Smith Marple and Anna Lucille Marple along with his sister, Brittany Marple.
Charlie’s family would like to extend their sincere appreciation, love, and thanks to all the doctors, especially Dr. Thomas Newton, and all the nurses at Inova Children’s Hospital in Fairfax for all of their love and kindness while taking amazing care of Charlie. Each and every one of you are true angels and words can never truly express our heartfelt gratitude.
Charlie’s family would also like to thank everyone in the Winchester Community for EVERYTHING you all have done for Charlie. This community is amazing and the way everyone came together to rally around and help Charlie will never be forgotten. We are truly appreciative of everyone’s thoughts, prayers, time, and efforts to give Charlie the best life possible over the last eight months. His amazing journey and everything he experienced or received would have not been possible without all of you. From the bottom of our hearts…Thank You.
