Charles L. Jenkins, Jr.
Charles Luther Jenkins, Jr., 89, of Winchester, Virginia, went to be with the Lord, Thursday, January 6, 2011, in Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Jenkins was born in 1921, in Madison County, Virginia, the son of the late Charles L., Sr. and Esther Jenkins. He was a member of Sunnyside Presbyterian Church in Winchester, where he served as both Deacon and Elder. Mr. Jenkins served in the United States Army from September 19, 1942 until December 1945, during World War II, under General George Patton. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the Normandy Invasion. Mr. Jenkins’ service earned him many battle stars and citations.
After his service he worked for Hable Real Estate, the Woolen Mill, as well as being a self employed carpenter. He later worked and retired from DeHaven’s Nursery.
He married Victoria Ruble on March 9, 1946 in Hagerstown, Maryland.
Surviving with his wife is his son, Gary Lee Jenkins and wife, Janet of Winchester, Virginia; two grandchildren, Brian “Scottie” Jenkins and Melissa Lynn Holland. To carry on his memory he leaves four great grandchildren, Dawson, Riley, Peyton and Parker; two brothers, Melvin Jenkins, Wesley “Curtis” Jenkins; five sisters, Mary Clem, Velma Shifflett, Nevelene Fuller and Florine Larrick all of Winchester and Viola Kerns of Bloomery, West Virginia.
Two sisters, Rachael Chrisman, Cathleen Anderson and one brother Eugene Jenkins, preceded him in death.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Reverend Ron Potter officiating. Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park, Frederick County, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be Brian Jenkins, Ryland Carper, Pat Clayton, Joe Salyer, Joe Shanholtz and Chuck DeHaven.
The family will receive friends on Sunday afternoon from 1:00-3:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
