Charles Dalton “Jay” Funkhouser, 89, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 4, 2026, at Winchester Medical Center.

Born on February 8, 1937, in Needmore, West Virginia, Jay was the son of the late Cecil D. Funkhouser and Roxie A. (Wilson) Funkhouser. He attended James Wood High School before honorably serving his country in the United States Air Force. Following his military service, Jay dedicated his life to craftsmanship, working as a skilled carpenter in residential construction across the Washington D.C., Maryland, and Northern Virginia areas until his retirement.

An avid outdoorsman, Jay lived life with a passion for nature. He was a proud member of the National Wild Turkey Federation and the Winchester/Frederick County Conservation Club. Whether he was hunting, fishing, tracking horse racing, or watching NASCAR and football, Jay found joy in the simple, vibrant moments of life.

He shared 57 beautiful years of marriage with his beloved wife, Jane Mary (Maguire) Funkhouser, whom he married on January 25, 1969, in Yonkers, New York.

In addition to his wife, Jane, he is survived by his loving children: a daughter, Jennifer Funkhouser of Winchester, VA; and a son, Patrick Dalton Funkhouser (Ronica) of Winchester, VA. He was the proud grandfather of Jacob Dalton Funkhouser (Ashya), McKenzie Funkhouser, McKayla Funkhouser, and Jessica Whittington (Sean), all of Winchester, VA, Adrian Sayers (Ashley) of Martinsburg, WV. His legacy continues through his seven cherished great-grandchildren: Taylor, Khloe, Camden, Alivialeigh, ZaKari, Tatum, and Charlotte.

Jay is also survived by his sisters, Carolyn Sibert (Walter) and Margaret Ann Oates, alongside numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who loved him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his great-granddaughter, Tynleigh; his sister, Betty Jean Wood; and his brothers, Donald, Robert, David, and Stephen Funkhouser.

The family will receive friends for a visitation on Sunday, July 19, 2026, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A memorial service will immediately follow at 3:00 PM at the chapel. Following the service, family and friends are invited to a reception at West Oaks Farm Market to share memories and celebrate Jay’s life.
