Catherine Haines Garrison passed away at her home on Sunday, February 23, 2025, just two days after her ninetieth birthday. She was born on February 21, 1935, to the late Charles Abraham and Laura Frances Baker in Clarke County, Virginia. She attended school at Marvin Chapel. She was married to Herman Garrison from September 1, 1970, until his passing in 2016.
Katie took great pride in being a homemaker and was an avid collector of Hummels, bone china and wooden nursery lamps she found in thrift stores. Above all she loved her family photos, and they were everywhere in the house. She enjoyed bus trips to Atlantic City and playing Bingo at the fire halls and the rescue squad in Winchester.
Katie was a volunteer at the VA Hospital in Martinsburg, WV. She enjoyed spending time with the veterans, reading to them or listening to their stories. She completed a CNA program at Dowel J. Howard, graduating at the top of her class. She was a boy scout leader with a local troop and loved square dancing with the Winchester Swingles. She belonged to the Wesley United Methodist Church and loved singing in the choir.
Her hobbies in the home included crocheting, reading, jigsaw puzzles, baking, redecorating her home and refinishing furniture.
Later in life, Katie rekindled a special friendship with a childhood classmate, Polly Whirley.
Katie is survived by her children, Stephanie LaRue (Terry), Sandy Nichols (Lewy), Sonny Haines (Tammy) and Pam Frye (Bobby). Her grandchildren, Missy LaRue, Rudi LaRue, Joshua Nichols, Justin Nichols and Lance Gunner Wines. She is also survived by several great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren. A granddaughter Jennifer Haines Richards preceded her in death.
Born Catherine Alice Baker, Katie outlived all twelve of her siblings, being seventh in birth order. They were Mary White, Frank Baker, Joe Baker, Jake Baker, Martha Giles, Anna Clevenger, twins, David and Dan Baker, Rebecca Groves, Eddie Baker, Sarah Jones and Sammy Baker.
The family would like to thank Blue Ridge Hospice for their support and Shelli Crockett, her primary doctor.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 12pm in the Reception Center.
