Catherine Borden
Mary Catherine Borden, 94, of Winchester, VA, died peacefully on Thursday, January 1 at Westminster-Canterbury Shenandoah Valley.
Mrs. Borden was born in 1920, in Poolesville, MD, the daughter of Raphael and Florence Offutt. She graduated from Richard Montgomery High School in Rockville, MD. Mrs. Borden was a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Winchester. She was active in parishes wherever she lived, including St. Catherine’s in Wheaton, MD and St. Agnes in Shepherdstown, WV. Mrs. Borden married Harrington Robert Borden on May 24, 1941 at St. Mary’s Church in Rockville, MD.
Surviving with her husband is her daughter, Betty Ann Sullivan (Gene), Reston, VA; sons, Bob Borden (Ingrid), Hartfield, VA; Michael Borden (Jay), San Francisco, CA; daughter-in-law Ellen Sturtevant, Augusta, ME; sister, Neilly Borden, Lewes, DE; seven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
Mrs. Borden was a generous and enthusiastic volunteer throughout her life, including involvement in organizations as varied as The Owls, The Women’s Club, and the Homemakers Club. She drove for Meals on Wheels until she was into her eighties. According to her children, she was a world-class bowler and card player.
Her cookies were legendary with the lucky recipients of her “care packages” and Red Cross blood donors.
Mrs. Borden was preceded in death by a son, Bill; sisters Margaret Henderson and Mary Robey; her brother Joseph Offutt, and a grandson, Patrick Sullivan.
The family will receive friends on Monday, January 5 from 10:00-11:00 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Winchester. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 11:00 with Father Stanley Krempa officiating. Everyone is invited to a reception following the Mass at Westminster-Canterbury. Interment will be private.
