Carol Dalrymple Maben, 79, of Conway, SC, passed away peacefully Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at Grand Strand Medical Center.
Born in Jamestown, NY to the late Charlotte C. Highhouse and Harry R. Freeborough of Youngsville, PA. Carol was a graduate of Youngsville High School (’62). Recruited pre-graduation, she started her professional career in Washington DC as clerk/steno for the FAA. During her diverse professional career, she excelled in a variety of roles including Secretary to the Maintenance Chief at Dulles International Airport, School Bus Aide/Driver & Classroom Assistant at NREP (VA), Administrative Assistant for Preservation of Historic Winchester, Administrative Assistant for the American Red Cross, Winchester Chapter (VA), and Administrative Assistant for Encore Productions and Studio K (SC). In 2012, she retired from the Horry County Department of Public Works after 15 years of dedicated service.
In addition to her parents, Carol is predeceased by her husband, Wilbur Maben (VA) and her life partner and soulmate, Larry Johnson (SC).
Carol is survived by her only child, Angela Robb & son-in-law, Karl (VA). Her beloved bonus family Charles & Cathy Gore (SC) and their extended family, David & Angela Johnson (FL), Gena, Benton, & Gary Karnap (TN), many dear friends at Public Works, and Carol’s canine companion, Blaze.
She served her community as a volunteer for Mt. View United Methodist Church (VA), 4-H leader (Frederick Co. VA), James Wood High School band booster, and many more. Her passions included her devotion to God, crocheting, baking banana bread, helping animals, country living, and visiting the mountains.
She will be most remembered for her true selflessness, kindness, being faithful, and praying for many on her extensive daily prayer list.
A graveside service will be held for Carol on Friday, May 17, 2024, at 11am at Mountain View UMC Cemetery, Star Tannery, VA.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Carol’s memory to, The Humane Society of NMB or 4-H Frederick County (VA), 107 North Kent Street, Winchester, VA 22601.
