Betty Frost Woodhouse Mayo
Betty Frost Woodhouse Mayo, 91, of Virginia Beach, died August 21, 2012, at her home at Westminster Canterbury in Winchester, VA. Mrs. Mayo was born in Princess Anne County, daughter of Bessie and John Frost Woodhouse. She was valedictorian of her class at Oceana High School, received a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1942, and a Master of Arts degree in Political Science from Louisiana State University in 1945. Mrs. Mayo then pursued doctoral studies with a teaching fellowship in political science at UNC, until marrying Dr. Fitzhugh Mayo in 1948. Dr. and Mrs. Mayo resided in Virginia Beach and later in Richmond with their four children. A long-time member of the Princess Anne Garden Club (a branch of the Garden Club of Virginia), Mrs. Mayo was honored with a horticultural award. She was also active in the Tidewater Chapter of the National Society of Colonial Dames and in a local book club.
Mrs. Mayo is survived by her husband of sixty-five years, Dr. Fitzhugh Mayo, as well as her four children: Bill Mayo of Blacksburg, VA, Frost McLaughlin of Winchester, VA, Rob Mayo of Washington, NC, and Dale Mayo Reynolds of McLean, VA. She is also survived by seven grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Her sister, Sara Woodhouse Andrews, and brother, John Frost Woodhouse, preceded her in death.
In celebration of her life, a memorial service will be held in Virginia Beach, Virginia, at a later date.
