Bernice Backstrom, a cherished mother, and grandmother peacefully departed this world on September 10, 2026, at the age of 101. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, on November 14, 1924, her life was defined by her unwavering love for her family and her generous spirit.

Raised by her grandparents, Bernice cultivated independence and strength from an early age. As a young woman, she worked for the Red Cross. Her path crossed with Albert Backstrom, who was stationed in Memphis with the United States Navy. The two exchanged vows in 1942 and eventually settled in Alexandria, Virginia, where they established a home and raised three children. Albert preceded her in death in 1997, along with her son, Robert Anthony Backstrom. Two daughters, Linda (Larry) Gaudreault and Susan (Greg) Meehan, and son-in-law Wesley Blackwell survive her.

In retirement, Albert and Bernice relocated to Reedville, Virginia, where they embraced a quiet life filled with boating, crabbing, gardening, and antiquing. Upon becoming a widow, Bernice moved closer to her daughters, initially residing in Woodbridge, Virginia, and subsequently in Bunker Hill, West Virginia.

Bernice had a passion for various hobbies, including playing bingo, doing jigsaw puzzles, sewing, embroidery, and, most notably, crocheting. She generously shared her crocheting expertise with her family, by creating handmade afghans. Christmas held a special place in her heart, and numerous trees adorned her home throughout the year.

Bernice’s remarkable legacy extends to her family, with six grandchildren: Geoffrey Gaudreault, Lauren Kirkland, Kimberly Marshall, Jason Marshall, Brenna Marshall Bresee, and Amy Marshall Morgan. Additionally, she has eighteen great-grandchildren and ten great-great-grandchildren. Her life has touched generations, and she will be deeply missed.
