Benjamin “Benny” Koon
Benjamin “Benny” Koon, 73, of Frederick County, VA, died Friday, May 20, 2016 at his home.
Mr. Koon was born in 1943 in Winchester, VA, the son of the late Harry Franklin and Elizabeth Koon. He was a member of Bethel Assembly of God in Front Royal, VA. Each Sunday he showed his generosity by giving the children in attendance a dollar for the offering. Benny worked at his father’s service station as a teenager, then moved on to a job of picking up cars for a used car dealer. He wore many hats in his lifetime, including being a taxi driver, a tow motor driver for Crown, Cork and Seal, bus driver for the Frederick County School District, drove the Winchester Royals bus for a few years, and even drove a newspaper delivery route in the middle of the night. After retiring from Crown, Cork and Seal in 1995 he continued to drive the school bus and drove the trolley for Candy Hill Campground as well as driving the courtesy van for Winchester Medical Center, volunteering for Meals on Wheels and Gideons International.
In younger years Benny had a passion for photography and videotaping; was known to take his truck mud-bogging at the Frederick County Fair and enjoyed riding Harley motorcycles and loved his red Challenger. He was a member of the Crown, Cork and Seal bowling team and looked forward to bowling every Friday night. Benny volunteered for driving a gentleman in a Faith in Action group to dialysis but eventually had to give up driving in 2004.
Benny was very much a people person. He cherished his time with his children and grandchildren; even spoiling the children on his bus routes. Benny enjoyed playing solitaire on the computer, watching Swamp People, American Pickers, Pawn Stars, and cooking shows, particularly Justin Wilson. He loved gospel music, as well as older country and bluegrass music.
Mr. Koon married Deloris Crabtree on July 21, 1994 in Hagerstown, MD.
Surviving with his wife are daughters, Jill Fleming (Jamey), Stephens City, VA, Kathie Liller (Dana), Germantown, MD, Stacey Melton, Luray, VA, Tonya Swift, Middleway, WV, Melanie Delancey (Tim), Lincolnton, GA; son, Matthew Koon, Chicago, IL; sisters, Sharon Phillips, Winchester, VA and Susan Flowers (James), Winchester, VA; 15 grandchildren and six great grandchildren; numerous extended family members; and his beloved feline, Coalie.
