Azmi A. Uthman

Azmi Amin Uthman, 75, of Winchester, Virginia, died Sunday, January 4, 2015, at Winchester Medical Center.

Mr. Uthman was born November 20, 1939, in Palestine, to Mr. and Mrs. Amin Uthman of Ramallah.

He was a graduate of Shepherd University, receiving a bachelor’s degree in political science, and the University of Virginia, achieving a master’s degree in foreign affairs. Mr. Uthman was a teacher with Winchester Public Schools for 30 years, teaching Government at John Handley High School. He retired in 2000.

Mr. Uthman was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Winchester. He was a past-president of Shawnee Lions Club and past president and member of the Winchester Education Association. He was also a member of the Board of Architectural Review and chairman of the City Council Reorganization Committee for the city of Winchester.

Mr. Uthman was preceded in death by his first wife, Charlotte T. Uthman; his parents; a sister; and a brother.

Surviving is his wife, Susan; his daughter, Heather Widener and her husband, Michael of Falls Church, Virginia; son, Daniel Uthman and his wife, Mary, of Portland, Oregon; three grandchildren, Atticus Widener, Virginia Widener, and Claire Uthman; one sister and five brothers; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 5:00-8:00 PM, at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel.

A celebration of life will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Thursday at First Presbyterian Church with Reverend Dr. Richard Reifsnyder officiating. Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 West Cork Street, Suite 405, Winchester, Virginia, 22601.

Mr. Uthman taught me senior government in 1971. He was so fun and I admired him very much! I was so sad to hear of his passing and wish the family much peace in the coming days.

I thank God for Mr.Uthman's support and encouragement to pursue studies beyond high school. He was able to see gifts in others while expecting the best from everyone. I saw Mr. Uthman in the grocery store after being married and with children. He wanted to know where I was and how I was doing. After updating him, he seemed disappointed that I was one of many who had moved to Frederick County. Mt. Uthman cared. I shall always remember Mr. Uthman. My sincere and heartfelt sympathy to each of you his loved ones. Blessings of peace to you.

I enjolyed Azmi's liberalism, laughter, and friendship when we were colleagues on the faculty at Handley High School.

Mr. Uthman was my Government teacher in 1983. He was an amazing teacher! RIP

Dear Daniel & Heather, I am so sorry for your loss. My prayers and thoughts are with you and your families.

It is quite disheartening to be writing another tribute to another one of my high school teachers within such a short time. Mr. Uthman was an excellent teacher that challenged me everyday. Between reading the federalist papers to decoding the amendments, Mr. Uthman helped me gain a true understanding about our government. He pushed me even when I didn't want to push myself and I am so grateful for that, especially since I am now a teacher as well. RIP, Mr. Uthman. You will be missed. Class of 1997.

So sorry for your loss. He was a wonderful man and I'm grateful to have known him. I have warm memories of spending time with his family in Jordan, who thought so highly of him.

Sincere condolences to the Uthman family. I will never forget how Charlotte and Azmi welcomed me to Winchester when I moved here in 1983 having just married Mr. P. And that friendship has lasted the span of time. I know Jim and Azmi are having quite the discussions sitting on those golden thrones of extraordinary teachers. May his family be consoled during these sad times knowing he lived his life to the fullest. God Bless You all.
