Some people spend a lifetime wondering if they made a difference- Marines don’t have that problem…..Ronald Reagan. As a young 20 yr. old Marine in the 80s, when I was in my “Charlies” uniform, you could recognize the supervisors that served in Vietnam by their chest full of ribbons mainly the purple one. That Purple Heart stood out amongst the other decorations. We looked up to them because they were heroes to us. God Bless you for your service to our country. Condolences to you Dale, Laurie and the Varnau family. Semper Fidelis.

As a much younger cousin I did not understand the full impact of Sonny leaving for Vietnam. I recall the tearful letters my Aunt Pearl shared with my mother when letters were received from Sonny while In Vietnam. Remembering the news of being hurt in Vietnam .. When returning home and joining the Fire department I was touched he followed his fathers career path, then a family career path. . The family dedication to the fire service is remarkable. Sonny was my mothers favorite Carpenter. When life pulled them close to living near each other, my mother always had a Sonny”s list of remodels wantsed. He was her go to carpenter . So many first memories as me being the very younger cousin, my first formal wedding, the older cousin that was always admired, muscle car, and the cool kid. Thinking of the time he lost with family during the holidays while serving Fairfax County in the fire department. Sonny I am sure my mother has found you the moment you arrived and she has her list of remodels she needs only from you in Heaven. God bless you, until later.
