Anthony James Fiorelli, Jr.
Anthony James Fiorelli, Jr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, uncle, friend and classmate, of Winchester, Virginia, died Monday, July 2, 2012, in Winchester Medical Center.
Tony Fiorelli was born April 10, 1930 in New York City, the third child of Anthony J. Fiorelli and Rose Catherine Tavolacci Fiorelli. He graduated from Brooklyn Polytechnic High School and the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Class of 1951. After his graduation from Kings Point, he sailed with the Merchant Marine before serving in the Korean War as Chief Engineer on the USS Willard Keith (DD-775).
Resigning his commission as a naval officer after four years of service, Tony went to work for Westinghouse at its Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory in Pittsburgh, PA, where he was part of an engineering team responsible for designing and installing the nuclear reactor cores on the USS Enterprise (CVN-65), America’s first nuclear-powered surface ship, and at Shippingport, the world’s first commercial nuclear power plant. At the same time, he earned his M.B.A. from the University of Pittsburgh.
Fiorelli began his career in executive management in 1972, when he was hired as General Manager of Flinchbaugh Products in Red Lion, PA. From there he became President and Chief Operating Officer of Clabir Corporation and subsequently General Defense Corp., publicly traded on the American Stock Exchange. He served on the AMEX Advisory Committee and until his late 70s on the Board of Directors of AXSYS Technologies.
Tony was a member of Elks Lodge #1727 in Plant City, FL, where he was a long-time resident, and more recently has been an active and involved resident of Westminster-Canterbury (Shenandoah Valley) since October 2009. He is survived by his devoted wife of 37 years, Evelyn Rexroth Fiorelli, his children Jim (Jan) of Richmond, VA, Marybeth (Leif) Dahl, Adamstown, MD, Mark (Martina), Jacksonville, FL, stepdaughter Andee (Tom) Aldstadt of Winchester, daughter-in-law Tina Fiorelli of Marriottsville, MD, and 7 loving grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Michael, brother Steve, and sister Fran.
A Celebration of Life will be officiated by Rev. Elizabeth Lewis on Friday, July 13 at 11:00 AM in the chapel at Westminster-Canterbury (Shenandoah Valley) in Winchester, followed by a luncheon reception in the Commons. Private inurnment will be at Mount Hebron Cemetery (Winchester) in the Veteran’s Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury (SVWC) Fellowship Fund, 300 Westminster-Canterbury Drive, Winchester, VA 22603.
