Ann Marie “Annie” Smith Pursel, 64 of Frederick County, Virginia, died Sunday, November 25, 2012, in her home.

Mrs. Pursel was born in 1948, in Cumberland, Maryland, the daughter of the late William Roy and Mary Elizabeth Smith, of Romney, West Virginia. She was a graduate of Hampshire High School as well as Winchester School of Radiologic Technologists and Virginia School of Massage. Mrs. Pursel was a Radiation Therapist with Winchester Medical Center, retiring in 2011. Mrs. Pursel was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Winchester as well as Beta Sigma Phi International Sorority which she was very active for many years. Annie was passionate about her cause for the American Cancer Society where she was known for helping start Relay For Life both in Winchester and Frederick Counties. She was an avid scrapbooker and enjoyed time with her family and friends.

She married Robert Eugene Pursel on April 29, 1995, in Winchester, Virginia.

Surviving with her husband is her step-son, Arthur E. Pursel and his wife, Jessica, of Lynchburg, Virginia; grandchildren, Danielle Elizabeth Pursel, Jessica Marie Pursel, Connor Eugene Pursel; step grandchildren, Kiley Ann Sheldon and Justin F. Sheldon and her brother, Michael Anthony Smith and his wife, Linda, of Romney, West Virginia.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, from 2:00-4:00 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.

A funeral mass will be at 1:00 PM on Friday at Sacred heart of Jesus Catholic Church with Father Stanley J. Krempa officiating. Interment will be private at Indian Mound Cemetery, Romney, West Virginia.

Very sorry to hear that Annie lost her battle with cancer. I knew her from scrapbooking every year and she was such a sweet, caring, lady who will definitely be missed. Will carry on her spirit at this year's retreat as well as our local Relay For Life here in Poolesville. God Speed Annie.

Annie, you look beautiful...you and I were more than Aunt and Niece, we were like sisters. We shared so many things together, a bed room, school days, dates and secrets...which I know you took with you! I will keep your secrets until I see you again and we will talk and laugh about them! Annie, I so wish we had lived closer, so we could have made more memories than we did. I will always treasure the memories of our trips to Las Vegas and to Myrtle Beach. Annie was my inspiration and my hero! One of the last conversations we had she told me I had to carry on and help others in her place. In your honor Annie, I will.

We are very saddened to hear of Annie's passing. She was a very special person. Paul has many fond memories growing up with her. She was so nice to me, when I was taking treatments, I was so scared.
