Alvin A. Whitman, 92, of Winchester, VA passed away Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at the Adler Center for Caring Hospice.
Mr. Whitman was born in 1931 in Readsboro, VT, son of the late Avery S. Whitman and Anna T. Whitman. He was a graduate of LSU earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering. Mr. Whitman was a veteran of the United States Navy and retired from the United States Government as an Aerospace Engineer. He enjoyed being on his computer, target shooting, reading, and photography. Mr. Whitman was an avid animal lover.
He was married to Margaret B. Whitman for 51 years who preceded him in death.
Surviving is a daughter, Mary M. Waldman (Will); sons, Michael C. Whitman (Julie) and Brian P. Whitman (Kathy); grandchildren, Lindsey Whitman, Lexy Waldman, Hannah Waldman; sister-in-law, Joan McMahon; nieces, Susan Corson, Lisa Mazzoni, and Hope Farner; and nephew, Mark Farner.
Along with his parents and wife Mr. Whitman was preceded in death by sister, May F. Farner; brothers, Charlie Root, Walter Root and Stanley Rutkowski; grandson, Brad Whitman, brother-in-law Charles “Mac” McMahon; and nephew, Gary Farner.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that a donation be made to Smithsonian Institution because of Mr. Whitman’s connection to the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center. Services will be at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
