Ken McConnell left a message on September 3, 2024:
My deepest condolences go out to each of the Whitman Family. I first met Al in Iran in early 1970. With there being only about 12 of us at this location, certain jobs kind of overlapped when necessary. As such I became his backup and went on to acquire his job when he left. A few years later at another overseas location I ran into him again. He was one of the four shift supervisors, so I worked closely with him once again. Joyce and I visited him outside Winchester, VA in 2022 I think it was which turned out to be my last face-to-face contact with him. Several times afterwards though we chatted on the telephone and almost joked at times that the way our friends were passing away, we'd be the only ones left. He was a contrary sort in ways I suppose but we always seemed to hit it off. Rest in Peace Al.

I was very blessed to have Al as my neighbor and friend for many years. He greeted us when we first moved in with a warm smile and an open heart, always ready to lend a hand or share a laugh. Whether it was through spontaneous chats, helping his beloved kitty Arnold, or simply sharing a laugh or throwing the frisbee for my dogs, Al made every moment special. He was truly like family, and he knew he could always stop on by for a chat or help around the house. I am so sorry Mary, Julie, Will and Mike for your loss. It was a pleasure getting to know your family over the years.
