We announce with deep sorrow the peaceful passing of Alice May Godlove, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Moorefield, WV, to George Willis Sherman and Eda (Fitzwater) Sherman, Alice’s journey was profound dedication and love, leaving a legacy that will forever be cherished.

Alice was the beloved wife of Wayne Godlove, Sr., with whom she shared 71 years of marriage until his passing in April 2023. She was a sister, friend, and mentor, predeceased by her brothers Charles Lee Sherman and Ralph Willis Sherman and sisters Mary Ann Groves, Hazel Miller, and Betty Ann Ours.

Alice May Godlove’s life was a testament to her vibrant spirit, marked by remarkable achievements and community engagement. A proud member of the 1965 Ladies National Duckpin Bowling Team, she showcased her passion and skill in the sport and brought it national recognition. Beyond the bowling alley, Alice served with distinction as both Secretary and Treasurer of the Shenandoah Valley Steam & Gas Engine Association, where she was instrumental in preserving heritage and fostering community spirit. Her commitment to service extended to volunteering at the Winchester Memorial Hospital Gift Shop, further highlighting her dedication to contributing positively to her community and making her life a vibrant journey of engagement and contribution.

Alice’s competitive spirit and skill were not confined to bowling; she was also an avid and skilled bridge player. Her prowess at the card table was admired by all who had the opportunity to challenge her in a game where her strategic thinking and competitive nature were on full display. This aspect of her life further illustrates the breadth of her talents and her unwavering dedication to excellence in all her endeavors.

Alice May Godlove’s life was a testament to unwavering resilience and profound love, epitomized through her role as the devoted wife of a dedicated truck driver and as a nurturing mother to two sons. Her existence was characterized by a formidable independence and a profound partnership that formed the bedrock of her family. Skillfully managing the home’s dynamics in her husband’s absence, Alice handled emergencies, made independent decisions, and offered emotional support across distances. Her strength and adaptability were the foundation upon which her family thrived, reflecting the depth of her commitment and love.

Alice leaves behind a family who revered her strength, love, and guidance: her sons, Wayne E. Godlove, Jr. (Kathi) of Winchester, VA, and Timothy R. Godlove (Albena) of Arlington, VA; her cherished grandchildren, Emily, Timothy, Jonathan, and Laura; and her adored great-grandchildren, Hailey, Parker, and Baker.
A celebration of Alice’s life will be held, with details to be shared, inviting friends and family to commemorate a remarkable woman whose love and teachings will guide us always.

A visitation will be held for Alice on Friday, April 12, 2024, at 9:30am with a service to follow at 10am all held at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel. Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park Mausoleum.
