Alice Catherine Malcolm Oates, 81, of Stephenson, Virginia, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 9, 2014.
Mrs. Oates was born in 1932, in Moorefield, West Virginia, the daughter of the late Arthur and Bertie Malcolm. Alice, along with her husband Jim, were the owners and operators for over 40 years of Stephenson Cash Grocery. She was a member of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher. Mrs. Oates was also an active volunteer for many years with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Winchester Medical Center. Alice was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
She married Weldon Grady Oates on January 21, 1950, in Winchester, Virginia. Mr. Oates preceded her in death on July 5, 1996.
Surviving are two daughters, Christine Zirkle and husband, William, Lisha Ritter and husband, Joel, all of Stephenson; two sons, Michael Oates of Stephenson, Richard Oates and wife, Teresa, of Clearbrook, Virginia; three grandchildren; David, Rachel and Thomas, two great grandchildren; Andrew and Amber; as well as her sister, Sylvia Crites of Moorefield, West Virginia.
One son, Tony Oates, a grandson, Arthur Oates, two sisters and three brothers, preceded her in death.
The family will receive friends on Sunday evening, February 16, from 6:00-8:00 PM, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 17, at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Pastor Marc Roberson officiating. Interment will be in Asbury Cemetery, Baker, West Virginia.
