Alfred B. Vernon, Jr.
Alfred Belton Vernon, Jr., 86, of Winchester, Virginia, died Monday, May 7, 2012, in Blue Ridge Hospice Inpatient Care Center.
Mr. Vernon was born in 1925, in Henderson, North Carolina, the son of the late Alfred B. Vernon, Sr. and Nellie Vernon. He retired as a civilian employee from the Department of the Army at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, after 20 years of service with the federal government. Mr. Vernon was a member of the Opequon Presbyterian Church, the American Association of Retired Persons, and the National Wildlife Federation.
Mr. Vernon was a Veteran having served in the United States Navy during World War II. He served in the North Atlantic aboard the USS Gandy. Mr. Vernon was awarded the American Area Medal and Star, the European-African Area Medal and the World War II Victory Medal.
He married Ethel Jean Bennett on June 30, 1946 in Westport, Massachusetts.
Surviving with his wife is a daughter, Donna Jean Atkins, of Manassas; son, Dr. Donald James Vernon of Winchester, and grandson, Alan Edward Atkins of Pottstown PA.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, James Vernon, John Vernon, George Vernon and Troy Vernon; one sister, Ella Mae Vernon Price, and one half-sister Ophelia Vernon Turner.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday at Opequon Presbyterian Church with Pastor David Witt officiating. Interment will follow at Shenandoah Memorial Park, Frederick County, Virginia.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 10:00-11:00 AM, at Opequon Presbyterian Church.
