Aaron “Mitch” Lee Mitchell, Sr., 77, of Star Tannery, Virginia, passed away surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Winchester Medical Center after a brief illness.
Born on May 19, 1949, in Winchester, VA, he was the son of the late Dennis Aaron Mitchell and Rosella (Whitlock) Mitchell. Mitch graduated from James Wood High School in 1967 before earning a Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics from Shepherd University in 1971 and a Master of Science in Education from James Madison University in 1979.
Mitch dedicated his professional life to education and technology. He began his career as a mathematics teacher at John Handley High School, where he also coached football and track, and wrote the computer science curriculum for the Virginia Department of Education. He later served as a Computer Science Professor and Director of Information Technology at Lord Fairfax Community College and worked as Director of Information Technology at Ashworth Bros. before eventually retiring from Melnor. After retirement Mitch spent his time as owner/operator of Duck Run Builders.
A devoted member of Mountain View United Methodist Church, Mitch sang in the church choir and shared a lifelong love for Southern Gospel music. He was deeply active in his community, serving as Virginia State Good Sam Director, a member of the Shenandoah Sams, and a dedicated member of the Back Creek Ruritan Club. Mitch enjoyed camping, cheering on the Redskins, riding his motorcycle, and caring for animals. Above all, his greatest joy was his devotion to his Lord, his church, and his beloved family.
On August 27, 1967, he married the love of his life, Brenda Kay (Link) Mitchell, in Winchester, VA, who survives him.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Aaron Lee Mitchell, II (Karen) of Star Tannery, VA, and Travis Mitchell of Winchester, VA; three grandchildren; and his brother, Scott H. Mitchell of Winchester, VA.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at 11am with a service to follow at 12:30pm all held at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel. Burial will take place at 2:30pm at Mountain View UMC Cemetery, Star Tannery, VA.
