Stanley Stephen “Stok” Stokwitz, age 91, of Winchester, Virginia, died Saturday, April 21, 2012, at his home in Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury.

Stok was born in 1920, in West Natrona, Pennsylvania, one of eight children born to Helen and Joseph Stokwisz. He joined the United States Army in 1940 as a member of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). He continued his career in the Army’s intelligence community until his retirement in 1968. Stok and his wife, Mary Louise, spent many years living overseas as part of his job and especially enjoyed the five years they lived in New Zealand.

Upon his retirement, Stok and Mary Louise lived in New Market, Virginia, on a property they lovingly named “Stok’s Hill,” until they moved first to Edinburg, Virginia, and then to Winchester in 1998.

Stok was preceded him in death by Mary Louise, his wife of 67 years, in May 2009.

Stok was a devout Catholic and devoted many years of service to the church, most especially at Saint John Bosco Church in Woodstock, Virginia, where he and Mary Louise had many friends. He was a member of Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic Church in Winchester and an honorary Lifetime Member of the Knight of Columbus.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marrea and Robert Riggs, of Winchester; his son, Stephen S. Stokwitz, of San Antonio, Texas; a grandson, Colton B. Stokwitz, of San Diego, California; a brother, Joseph Stokwisz, and numerous nieces, nephews, and godsons.

Stok was blessed by receiving merciful, tender, and loving care from many compassionate women and men while his health declined over the final years of his life. The McFarland’s took him into their home and nurtured him through recovery from his initial stroke. Later, after entering Shenandoah Valley Westminster-Canterbury, he received all the professional, compassionate, and warmhearted care anyone could ask for. His family thanks you, one and all.
