Roy Edward McDonald, Sr., 75, of Stephens City, Virginia passed away Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at home after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease and dementia.
Mr. McDonald was born in 1942 in Winchester, Virginia, the son of the late James and Eunice Strosnider McDonald. He graduated from James Wood High School, Class of 1960 and served six years in the National Guard. Roy loved farming and tilling the soil, for which he had a passion for his John Deere antique tractors. He raised cattle and tended his apple orchards. Roy was a 4-H and FFA member and enjoyed showing cattle for which he received many awards. He was a member and elder of Cedar Creek Presbyterian Church. Roy served as Director for the Mid-Atlantic Farm Credit, a board member of Southern States, and a member of Shawquon Ruritan for 54 years and was presented a life membership, serving as President and Treasurer. He was a member of the Frederick County Fruit Growers Association, Virginia Farm Bureau, Virginia Cattlemen’s Association, and other farm related organizations. Roy received many awards and accolades from various organizations for his farming achievements.
Roy married Loretta Grace Wilkins on June 10, 1962 at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Frederick County, Virginia.
Surviving with his wife of 56 years are sons, Roy E. McDonald, Jr. (companion, Joanna) and Jason McDonald (wife, Jennifer); and grandson, Justin McDonald.
Along with his parents Roy was preceded in death by a brother, James Kenneth McDonald.
The family will receive friends from 6 pm to 8 pm on Monday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Reverend Dr. Rose Wayland officiating. Interment will be private.
