Robert Eugene Carter, 84, of Winchester, Virginia died Sunday, December 7, 2014 in the Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Carter was born in 1930 in Washington, D.C., the son of the late Raymond W. and Helen B. Carter. He was a graduate of Stephens City High School and then of Embry Riddle Aviation School in Miami, graduating with his Aircraft and Power Plant License. Robert was a veteran of the United States Army, having served as Private First Class during the Korean Conflict. He also served four years in the Air Force Active Reserve. During his Military career he received the Occupation Medal Japan, Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Star and the United Nations Service Medal. He was lead mechanic in aircraft maintenance for United Airlines, retiring after 35 years of service. After his retirement Robert dabbled as a carpenter in home construction and was forever finding something to tinker with. Robert renewed his pilot’s license and became a fourth owner of an airplane. He really enjoyed flying out of Winchester Airport and going to breakfast with the “Airport Bums”. He was also an active member of Macedonia United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, Mr. Carter was preceded in death by his first wife, Corieda Ann Carter, his second wife, Mary Virginia (Welch) Carter and his brother Owen Luther Carter.
Surviving are three children, Lucretia “Lucy” Helen Davis and husband, Eddy, of Vista, CA, Thomas Eugene Carter and wife, Doreen of San Jose, CA and Brian Keith Carter and wife Janina of Forest Ranch, CA; four grandchildren, Devan August Davis of Vista, CA, Kai Robert Carter of San Jose, CA, Landon Marcus Carter and Helena Christina Carter, both of Forest Ranch, CA; two nieces, Barbara Carter Singhas and Anna Marie Suriano, and a nephew, Raymond Luther Carter.
The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 7:00 -9:00 PM at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park. All are invited to a reception, which will follow the interment, in the Macedonia United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
Pallbearers will be Robert’s nephew Raymond L. Carter and his great nephews Donald Edward “Eddie” Shanahan III, Michael Eugene Shanahan, Scott Mathew Shanahan, Joshua Lee Neff and Jason Carl Neff.
