Mary (Vicinus) Kamien, 64, of Frederick County, Virginia, formerly of Bethesda, Maryland, passed away Tuesday, January 22, 2019, at her home.
Mary was born in 1954 in Washington, DC, the daughter of the late Henry F. Vicinus and Lois G. Vicinus. She graduated from the Philadelphia College of Art in 1977 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. Her major was in Painting with a minor in Art History. She also attended Montgomery College and Western Maryland College. Mary was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Delaplane, Virginia. Mary participated in the bell choir at church and sang in the church choir, and was a member of the women’s group and book group. She was also a member of the Delaplane Zen Group. Mary enjoyed art and loved to cook. In the late 80s, Mary saw her future husband, “Kit”, on the Today Show as a spokesman for a dating service, DateAble, Inc., a company that matches couples with disabilities. As soon as she saw him she made up her mind “I’m going to meet this man”……and she did, and they were married in 1988 at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Rockville, Maryland. Mary and Kit would immerse themselves into the culture of a particular country for long periods of time; learning the language, studying the landscape, cooking and eating the food. She was a very creative, loving individual who had a wonderful sense of humor.
Surviving are sisters-in-law, Michelle Kamien Maloney (Frank) of Blairsville, Georgia and Rochelle Kamien Jones of Loveland, Colorado; sister, Margaret Vicinus Brown (Wallace Benjamin) of Hanover, Pennsylvania; a niece and a nephew; and many wonderful friends.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Christopher “Kit” J. Kamien.
A memorial service will be held at 1 pm on Saturday, March 2nd, at Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 9670 Maidstone Road, Delaplane, Virginia with The Reverend Amanda R. Knouse officiating. Interment will be in the church yard.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s memory to a charity of your choice.
