Born on November 8, 1952, in Mineral Wells, Texas, to Camilla and Hudson Powell (deceased). The family moved to Virginia in 1960, where John grew up in Arlington, VA and attended Washington Lee high school where he graduated in 1971. John attended East Tennessee State University where he earned a degree in Biology, with a minor in Botany. Later he attended George Mason where he earned his law degree, and began his career practicing law in 1987. John was a partner at the firm Gabeler, Battocchi & Powell, PC in Mclean, VA for many years. In 2015 John accepted a position as an Assistant County Attorney with Loudoun County, Virginia, where he practiced until his sudden death.
John was an avid gardener, and continued his interest in all things associated with the natural sciences, but his main focus was on botany and reptiles, in particular, John was passionate about snakes and protecting the threatened native species. John and his brother Charles were avid Dallas Cowboy fans, and shared the good times and bad times the team experienced over the many years they stood behind their team. John was a loving and devoted husband, father, son and brother and was involved in many activities outside his law practice until he had to focus on the illness that required much of his attention. John will be truly missed by his family and many friends.
The service will be a private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his honor to the National Kidney Foundation (kidney.org/support).
