James Thomas Vickers, known affectionately as “Jim,” passed away peacefully on September 26, 2024, at Blue Ridge Hospice Inpatient Care Center in Winchester, VA. He was 72 years old.
Born in 1952 in Shelby, NC, to the late Jacob Glover Vickers, Sr. and Mary Dorothy (Alexander) Vickers, Jim’s journey was marked by entrepreneurial spirit, community leadership, and a passion for growth and preservation.
After earning his associate degree from Richard Bland University, Jim founded Oakcrest Companies, Inc. in 1974. Under his visionary leadership, the company flourished, developing numerous subdivisions throughout the Shenandoah Valley and playing a crucial role in the historic preservation and rehabilitation of downtown Winchester.
Jim’s impact extended far beyond his business endeavors. He was a dedicated member of Shenandoah University’s Board of Trustees since 1999, serving as Chair from 2010 to 2012. His commitment to community development was evident in his service on the boards of Bank of Clarke County and Mount Hebron Cemetery, as well as his instrumental role in establishing Our Health in the Winchester area. Jim was also a respected member of the Top of Virginia Builders Association.
An avid golfer and loyal Dallas Cowboys fan, Jim balanced his professional achievements with his love for sports and family.
On December 31, 1986, he married Jane, his beloved wife of 37 years.
Jim is survived by Jane; his son, Jason Vickers; daughter, Kathryn “Katie” Alexander Vickers (Albert Quesada Bernaus); grandchildren, London James and Bowie Angles Quesada-Vickers; brother, Jacob Glover Vickers, Jr. (Linda); sisters-in-law, Virginia Thompson and Susan Foura (Ben); and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 6, 2024, from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm, followed by a service at 3:30 pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Interment will be private.
