James Carl Moyer, 69 of Winchester, passed away on Wednesday, October 15,
2025, at Blue Ridge Care Inpatient Center.
Jim was born in 1955 in Wyomissing, PA, the son of the late James and Jean
Moyer. He was a high school graduate who went on to earn his Bachelor’s Degree
in Political Science from Shepherd University. He began his career as a Payroll
Processor for ADP and then moving on to work for Winchester Electric Service,
while also doing technology work for Contact Corporation, finally retiring as a
Loan Officer for Navy Federal Credit Union.
Jim was one of the founding members of the French and Indian War Foundation
as well as their webmaster. A local commensurate Historian, he was a member of
the Mercer Division, involved with local reenactments of the French and Indian
War. Jim was a wonderful sculptor and artist specializing in charcoal, pencil and
ink. As a local Winchester Historian, he investigated and researched information
regarding Fort Loudoun and George Washington’s role here in Winchester. Jim
was active with the annual George Washington Birthday and Election
Celebrations. He was active with local politics, regarded as a lively incredible
debater and conversationalist. Jim was the founder of the Jim Moyer Chess Club
which was held twice a summer at the Discovery Museum with a curriculum that
always began with the “Golden Rule”.
Jim is survived by his wife Fay whom he married on September 4, 2007, daughter,
Ashley Moyer, granddaughter, Isis Layton, sister, Shelly Lee (the late Denny),
brother, Pete Moyer (Christi), nieces, Kylea Keagy (Levi), daughters, Audrey and
Camila, and niece, Grace (Zach) and many dear friends.
A Service will be held for Jim on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at 6pm at Omps
Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with a reception to follow. Officiating will be Rev.
Sean Devolites.
