Duane Wesley Hockman
Duane Wesley Hockman, 85, of Winchester, Virginia, passed away, Thursday, February 11, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Hockman was born in 1924, in Hoy, West Virginia, the son of the late Alva Mack Hockman and Virginia Elizabeth Hockman Godlove. At the age of 18, he was drafted into the Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky, where he trained as a Tank Destroyer Driver, attached to the 45th Infantry Division. He was in the invasion of Africa, Sicily, Anizio, and Rome, Italy and later in the invasion of Southern France. Duane was captured by the Germans in the Rhone Valley near Lyon, France and was interned for the duration of the war in a POW camp near Mooseburg, Germany. Battles and Campaigns participated in were Naples-Foggia-Rome-Arno-Southern France, with decorations and citations for European-African-Middle Eastern Ribbon with three Bronze Service Stars-Good Conduct Medal-World War II Victory Medal-The Purple Heart and Ex-POW Medal. He married Martha Winifred Price Kitchen on May 31, 1948 in Winchester, Virginia. Duane retired from Time-Dc, Inc., after 35 years as a truck driver. He then became a partner with his son, Michael in an ambulance service that later became a division of Valley Regional Enterprises, a Valley Health System organization, which he later retired from as an EMT and Courier. He was a member of The Grace Brethren Church, where he served as an usher and Sunday School Teacher. Duane was also a member of the American Legion, VFW and The Bob Frakes Ex-POW Chapter.
Surviving with his wife of 62 years; is a son, Michael Duane Hockman and his wife Darlene Ritter of Winchester; a daughter, Rebecca K. Myers and her husband, Franklin L. of Winchester; four grandchildren, Laura A. James and her husband, Brian of Long Island, New York, Melanie K. Nelson and her husband, Billy, Jamon White, and Brent Michael Hockman, all of Winchester, Virginia; five great grandchildren, Kevin L. Myers, Crystal Nelson, Misty Nelson, Katherine Raffa, and Brian James; two sisters, Ruby Hockman Grossnickle of Burkittsville, Maryland and Virginia Dale Hockman Vance of Winchester; and a brother, Roxy Hockman of Memphis, Tennessee. A grandson, Franklin L. Myers, Jr.; a great grandson, Steven Chestnut; and two brothers, James L. Hockman and William Mack Hockman, all preceded him in death.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, February 17th at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel with Pastor Matt Lohr officiating. Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park with Military Honors by VFW Post 2123.
Pallbearers will be Jamon White, Brent Hockman, James McFarland, Robert Lee, Albert Garret, and Tim Price.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, February 16th from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel.
