David Andrew Owings, 78 of Martinsburg, WV, passed away on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at Warren Memorial Hospital.

Dave was born in 1947 in Winchester and grew up in Middletown, the son of the late Will and Rachel Owings. Dave retired in 2012 after 35 years as a Funeral Director at Omps Funeral Home. He was an Auctioneer for Owings Auctions for over 40 years. Dave was a member of Vanville Church of Christ in Martinsburg.

Dave enjoyed golfing, going to play BINGO and camping. He was a member of and involved with the Ruritan, Lions Club, Ducks Unlimited. Dave loved playing Rook and Poker with family and friends and enjoyed anything that involved socializing with people. Every morning, he would enjoy breakfast with his friends and family at Clearbrook Shopping Center where he even had his own jar of apple butter. During his years as an auctioneer Dave enjoyed doing benefit auctions for social groups and churches.

He married Cheryl Suzanne Catlett on July 21, 1984, and she preceded him in death on April 2, 2020.

Dave is survived by his son, Ryan A. Owings (Liz); daughters, Rachelann R. Mitchell (Travis), Jennifer L. Cloud (Matt); grandchildren, Malachi Cloud, Malin Cloud, Gracie Cloud, Cody Mitchell, Kylee Mitchell, Jackson Owings and Madelyn Owings; sisters, Mary Lou Stallings, Carol Sorokin, Sue Chewning, brother, John Owings and many loving nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins and dear friends.

In addition to his parents and wife, Dave is preceded in death by his brother, Will L. Owings, Jr.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, from 5pm to 8pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. A service will be conducted on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at 11am at Grace
United Methodist Church. Interment will be in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Middletown, VA. Pastor Dan Nicksich will officiate.

John and family, we are very sorry for a loss of a great friend. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all at this time.

Nancy and I are so sorry to hear the news of David’s passing. David and I were OnCall and rotation partners for several years at Omps. We had a great working relationship and enjoyed many a breakfast and lunches at the Amherst Diner over the years. Rachel, Jennifer, Ryan and families again accept our condolences.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of David Owings, a man whose presence and voice left a lasting mark on Middletown and the surrounding community. David was not only a gifted auctioneer—well-known for bringing people together at estate and farm sales—but also a man of great character, integrity, and humor. I will always remember David’s role in helping with my grandfather’s estate, a time when his professionalism and kindness meant so much to my family. My heartfelt sympathies go out to Mary Lou, Sue, John, and Ryan, and to the entire Owings family.

I'm sorry we have lost another member of the JWHS Class of '65. I shared several classes and activities with David and am today reading what he kindly wrote in my yearbook 60 years ago.
