Charles “Sam” Sammuel Shaffer, Jr., 72, of Winchester, Virginia died Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Winchester Medical Center.
Mr. Shaffer was born in 1945 in Loudoun County, Virginia, the son of the late Lavina Lou and Charles Sammuel Shaffer, Sr. He was a retired employee of VDOT and Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority. Mr. Shaffer was a veteran having served in the United States Army. He enjoyed spending time outdoors, working in his yard, gardening and fishing.
He married Alice Evelyn Cockrill on October 9, 1967 in Vienna, Virginia.
Surviving with his wife of 50 years are his sons, Charles Sammuel Shaffer, III (Donna) of Winchester, Virginia, Carl Nelson Austin (Michelle) of Berkeley Springs, West Virginia; grandchildren, Dianna, Sammuel and Kimberly Shaffer, Unity, Emily, Chance and Sky Austin; great grandchildren, Addy Cook, Maddie Harden, and Zachary Shaffer; sister, Barbara Ball of Martinsburg, West Virginia; and brothers, Roy Shaffer of Winchester, Virginia and Richard Shaffer of Martinsburg, West Virginia.
Along with his parents, Mr. Shaffer is preceded in death by his son, Bryan Allen Shaffer and brothers, Gene Shaffer and William Shaffer.
The family will receive friends from 6 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday evening at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 pm on Thursday at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel with Pastor Alan Morrison officiating. Interment will be in Mount Hebron Cemetery, Winchester, Virginia. A celebration of life reception will follow the interment at Greenwood Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, 809 Greenwood Road, Winchester, Virginia 22602.
Serving as pallbearers will be Billy Middleton, Sam Rinker, Buddy Rinker, Bobby Newcomb, Todd Shaffer, and Scott Shaffer.
