Charles Albert Pine, Jr., better known as “Chuck,” 92, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by his family on November 15, 2023.
Chuck was born December 4, 1930 in Berryville, Virginia, the son of the late Charles Albert Pine, Sr. and Margaret Chapman Pine. He was a lifelong resident of Winchester and attended John Handley High School. He graduated from Augusta Military Academy in 1949 and then went on to attend Chrysler Corporation’s Training Center in Detroit, Michigan where he specialized in business and financial management.
Chuck served in the U.S. Army in Germany from 1951-1953. After his service, Chuck returned to Winchester in 1953 and worked with his father in the automobile business, Pine Motor Company, eventually becoming President. Chuck sold Pine Motor Company in 1975 and established a real estate business known as Pine Realty. As President and founder of Pine Realty, Chuck enjoyed investing in real estate which included building commercial and residential properties. Over the years, he built many relationships with his tenants with some becoming like family. He worked in this capacity up until his death.
Chuck married Emily Jean Ward on June 16, 1956. They were married for fifty-three years until her death in 2010. Their years together were spent traveling the world, entertaining friends and spending quality time with family. In his final years, Chuck regularly spoke about his love for Jean and his desire to see her again.
He is survived by his daughter Kimberly Burke and her husband Glen of Winchester; granddaughters Brittany Dzuris (Brian) of Rochester, Michigan and Taryn Mattern (Sam) of Alexandria, Virginia; and great grandchildren, Jordan and Kendall Dzuris of Rochester, Michigan. He is also survived by a daughter from a previous marriage, Lisa Brumback (Thomas) of Alleman, Iowa and half-sister Patricia Pine of Winchester. Chuck was preceded in death by his wife Jean and his daughter Tracy Ward Pine.
Chuck was actively involved in the Winchester community. His business affiliations included being a past director of the Commercial and Savings Bank, past board member of Wachovia Bank, past board member of First Union Bank, past President of the Winchester Automobile Dealers Association, past President of the Frederick-Winchester Home Builders & Allied Businesses, and past Director of the Advertising Board for Chrysler Corporation.
His civic activities included serving as a former President and lieutenant governor of the Winchester Kiwanis Club and being awarded a George F. Hixon Fellowship. He was named Outstanding Kiwanian of the year in 1960. Chuck served as a past member of the Shenandoah University Board of Trustees, past Noble Grand of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, past member of the Jaycees, past chairman for the Eagle Board of Review for Shawnee District, past member of the Winchester Junior Chamber of Commerce, past member of the Advisory Board for the Salvation Army, and past member of the Board of Directors for the Winchester Boy Scouts. Chuck served the city of Winchester as a member of the City Council from 1978-1982 and a member of the Winchester Zoning Appeals Board. A member of Braddock Street United Methodist Church since 1942, he served in various capacities over the years including Assistant Treasurer, member of the Administrative Board and member of the finance committee.
The family will receive friends at Omps Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 28th from 5-7pm. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, November 29th at 11:00 a.m. at Braddock Street United Methodist Church. Pallbearers will be Glen Burke, Brian Dzuris, Sam Mattern, Donnie Bowers, John Hawes and Andy Bouvitas. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Chapman, Al Chapman and the Winchester Kiwanis Club. Burial will be private.
