Barbara Jean Hicks, 83, of Frederick County, Virginia died Tuesday, November 1, 2016 at her home.
Mrs. Hicks was born in 1933 in Arlington County, the daughter of the late John W. Davis and Alena E. Douglas. She was a graduate of Washington and Lee High School, Class of 1951. Mrs. Hicks had been employed as a Bookkeeper for many private Stock Brokerage firms, and as a Librarian in California & Washington, D.C. She was also the author & illustrator of a children’s book “The Tooth Fairy’s Pillow”. Later in life she and her husband, Billy, owned and operated The Hickory House gift shop in Winchester and Wooden Delights, in Florida. She was a loving wife, mother and caring homemaker who had a passion for reading, painting, decorating, cooking, and making floral arrangements. She loved to travel with her husband and entertain friends and family with her cocktail parties. As a wife and mother she always made holidays extra special with her gift of transforming her home into a magical place to visit. She especially enjoyed making holiday candies and treats, and had a special talent for that.
Her husband, Billy Gene Hicks, whom she married on October 25, 1952 in Washington, D.C. preceded her in death on October 7, 2016.
She is survived by sister, Lois Kidd of Logan, UT, daughters Susan Jackson of Ligonier, PA, Sharon Holland of Keystone, FL; Shannon Brannon of Clear Brook, VA, and son, Leslie Hicks of Winchester, VA; Stepchildren Billy Wynn Hicks, Lisa Gilbert & Melanie Bingham of Montgomery, AL, 11 grandchildren & 11 great grandchildren.
Mrs. Hicks was preceded in death by brothers, Douglas Davis, Bill Davis, Buddy Davis, Jimmy Davis; sisters, Alma Benton, Comelette Davis, and Laverne Liptrap.
A memorial service will be held on November 19, 2016 at 11:00 am in the Chapel at First Presbyterian Church in Winchester, VA, with Rev. Maren Sonstegard-Spray officiating.
