Woodrow “Woody” Goins, 82, passed away on December 10, 2025, in Winchester, Virginia. Born on June 10, 1943, in Salina, Oklahoma, he led a life marked by dedication to education, music, and community service.
Woody earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education, laying the foundation for a distinguished career that would span decades. From 1967 to 1993, he served as the superintendent of Cleora Public Schools in Oklahoma. During his tenure, he played a pivotal role in shaping the educational experiences of countless students and was known for his steadfast commitment to academic excellence and student development.
Beyond his professional achievements in education, Woodrow was also an accomplished musician. Proficient in both guitar and piano, he shared his love of music with others by teaching guitar lessons to many aspiring musicians. He was especially known for organizing Annual Musical Christmas Programs that became cherished traditions within the community, events that brought people together through song and celebration year after year.
After retiring from public education, Woody continued to serve others by becoming an instructor at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) training facility in Virginia. From 1998 to 2005, he contributed to national preparedness efforts by training individuals who would go on to respond to emergencies across the country.
Woody also found joy in everyday pursuits. He enjoyed exercising regularly and took great pride in maintaining his lawn. A devoted sports fan, he especially loved cheering on the Oklahoma Sooners football team, a passion that connected him to his roots and brought him much enjoyment over the years.
Woody was preceded in death by his father, Bristow Woodrow Goins; mother, Evalene Goins; and brother, Ron Goins; and sister-in-law, Janice Vanover.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Elsie Goins; their sons, Woodrow Goins Jr. and Ron Goins; sister Reta Finch; brother-in-law Dan Finch; nephews Ken Bowles and Billy Jack Bowles with wife Lisa Bowles; sister-in-law Sheri Goins; nephew Brit Goins, brother-in-law Gene Vanover; nieces Terry Morgan with husband Pat Morgan; and Toni Reno with husband Tim Reno; and nephew Rusty Vanover with wife Jamie Vanover.
Admired and loved by many, Woodrow Goins leaves behind a legacy of service, music, mentorship, and dedication. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
