Wanda A. Gilmer
Wanda Ann Gates Gilmer, 79, of Winchester, Virginia, died Monday, September 21, 2015, in a local nursing facility.
Mrs. Gilmer was born in 1936, in Smyth County, Virginia, the daughter of the late Arthur and Pansy Gates. She attended James Wood High School and was a bookkeeper at National Fruit, Bell’s Clothing and finally retired from Fulton’s Trucking in Winchester.
Mrs. Gilmer was an avid bowler and played on leagues for many years. She loved taking annual trips to Las Vegas, watching classic movies and listening to Big Band Music. Mrs. Gilmer had many bird feeders and enjoyed watching the birds. She loved all animals – especially dogs. Mrs. Gilmer had many lifelong friends but, her greatest enjoyment came from her family. She was a loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother.
She married Robert James Gilmer in 1952. He preceded her in death on March 28, 2002.
Surviving is her son, Roger Gilmer and his wife, Gini, of Winchester; four grandchildren, Rachelle Stump and husband, Skip of Winchester, James Gilmer, Joey Gilmer and wife, Becky, all of Norfolk, Virginia, Kristen Swimley and husband, B.T. of Virginia Beach; and five great grandchildren, Jaden Stump, Mason Stump, Ella Swimley, Will Swimley and Cole Gilmer; and lifelong friend, Barbie Ferguson.
One sister, Lila Emmons and two brothers, Jim and Buddy Gates, preceded her in death.
The family will receive friends on Friday, from 1:00 – 2:00 PM, prior to the service, at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel
A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM, on Friday, at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel, with Reverend Bridget Coffey officiating. Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park, Frederick County, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be Rodney Emmons, Gil Emmons, B.T. Swimley, Skip Stump, Rick Thweatt and Joey Gilmer. Honorary pallbearer will be Jamie Gilmer.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Esther Boyd Animal Shelter, 161 Fort Collier Road, Winchester, Virginia, 22603 or SPCA, 115 Featherbed Lane, Winchester, 22601.
