Walter Miller “Walt” Shaver, Jr., 92, of Frederick County, VA, passed away Saturday, November 22, 2025, at his home surrounded by family.
Walter was born in 1933 in Baltimore, MD, son of the late Walter Shaver, Sr. and Anna (Wine) Shaver. He graduated from Triplett High School in Mount Jackson, VA, and attended Monroe Business College. He was the bookkeeper/salesman and part owner of Swimley’s Furniture Store, retiring after 40 years of service. Walter was very active in the Winchester/Frederick County community.
He was a clerk at the Free Medical Clinic in Winchester and volunteered with Winchester Area Food Bank. Walter was very giving of his time to help others.
Walter enjoyed hiking with the Wednesday Wanderers, bowled in bowling leagues for about 60 years, and enjoyed reading, crosswords, and Sudoku. He was an avid fan of bluegrass and attended many Bluegrass shows and festivals. Walter was also a huge Redskins (Commanders) fan, to Walter they will always be the Redskins! He attended Centenary United Church of Christ, now known as Open Door United Church of Christ in Winchester and was very active within the church community.
Most of all, Walter dearly loved his family. He cherished his time together with all of them and looked forward to the annual beach trips with family and friends.
His wife, Alice Adeste Shaver, whom he married in 1954 in Woodstock VA, preceded him in death in 2023.
Surviving is a daughter, Mary Beth Shaver of Clear Brook, VA and a son, Stephen Edwin Shaver of Winchester, VA; sister, Bonnie Bowman (Dan) of Woodstock, VA; and sister-in-law, Linda P. Shaver of Kure Beach, NC.
Along with his parents and his wife, Walter was preceded in death by a sister, Gloria Shaver and a brother, Koln “Bud” Shaver.
A visitation will be from 12 pm to 1 pm on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at Omps Funeral Home, South Chapel. A funeral service will follow the visitation at 1 pm with Pastor Michael Evans officiating. Interment will be in Shenandoah Memorial Park Cemetery. A reception will follow the interment at Omps Reception Center, Amherst Chapel.
Serving as pallbearers will be Tony Hileman, David Garber, Daniel Garber, Randy Jones, Mathew Jones, and Mark Nixon.
Honorary pallbearer will be Bryan McFarland.
