Virginia Lee Goss Newcome, wife, mother, grandmother and friend, departed this life on Friday, December 29, at the Winchester Medical Center.
Born in 1926 in Chestertown MD, to Merle Jane White and William Ellis Goss, Virginia moved to the Winchester area as a small child. She attended John Kerr Elementary School and proudly graduated from John Handley High School in 1944.
Virginia married her husband, Leonard Douglas Newcome, in 1952 and they made their home in Winchester until 1962 when they moved to Vienna, VA. Upon retirement, in 1986, Virginia and Leonard returned to their beloved Winchester, where she was active with the Braddock Street United Methodist Church and enjoyed volunteering at the Winchester Medical Center.
Like many women of her era, Virginia went to work upon graduating high school. She had a work ethic beyond compare, sometimes working multiple jobs to help support her parents, in her younger years, and ultimately her growing family. She especially enjoyed her years as a C&P Telephone operator in Winchester and the decade she spent working at the Woodward & Lothrop Department store in Tyson’s Corner, from which she retired in 1986.
In addition to being a busy working mom, Virginia supported her children as a volunteer with the Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and many youth league baseball and football teams. Her door was always open to friends and neighbors, a pot of hot coffee ready to share, and any child within earshot could count on being invited in for dinner.
Virginia is predeceased by her parents, her sister and best friend, Jane Goss Vaught, and her husband of 52 years.
She is survived by her four children, Dr. Lindsey Newcome Marcellin and her husband, Roger of Fairfax, VA; David Newcome and his wife, Sharon, of Vienna, VA; Doug Newcome, of Stephens City, VA; Amy Newcome Scherer and her husband, Bill, of Earlysville, VA; and nine grandchildren, Courtney, Grace and Megan Marcellin; Colin Newcome; Thomas and Joanna Newcome; and Kendall, Merritt, and Lindy Scherer. She is also survived by a dear childhood friend, Adolene Long, whose weekly visits meant the world to her over the last three years.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, January 8, at 11am, at the Braddock Street United Methodist Church, 115 Wolfe Street, Winchester, Virginia 22601. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork Street, Suite 405, Winchester, Virginia 22601.
