Viola Crystal Nordstrom Kline
Viola Kline, 86, passed from this life to eternity on July 9, 2011 at Lynn Care Center in Front Royal, VA. Viola was born in Baldwin, North Dakota on November 30, 1924 to John Albion Nordstrom and Nellie Matilda Peterson Nordstrom both of Swedish heritage.
Viola graduated from Bismarck High School in Bismarck, ND in 1944. After graduation she was one of many young “War Girls” that left their hometowns in the mid-west to work for the War Department during WWII in Washington, D.C. Viola later worked with the C&P Telephone Company dedicating her next 35 years as a telephone operator in Washington and the surrounding area. She met her future husband Harry Leo Kline, Sr., while riding on his transit bus to and from work. They were married at Rockville Presbyterian Church in Rockville, MD on May 6, 1950. Harry died 25 years later on September 15, 1975 at home in Bladensburg, MD. After retiring, Viola moved to Winchester and then to Stephens City, Virginia to be near her daughter and grandchildren.
Viola was a lifelong Lutheran and a devoted sister, wife, mother and grandmother. She was an independent and strong woman, a recipient of the 50 year diabetic medallion and enjoyed gardening and sewing; but most loved her time with her family.
She is survived by her daughter Barbara Helen Stickley and her husband Steve, two grandsons Tommy Lee Stickley and Christopher Dakota Stickley all of Stephens City. A stepson, Harry Leo Kline, Jr. of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, a daughter in law, Betty Kline of Annapolis, MD and dear to her heart, 11 step grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews across the nation. She was one of nine Nordstrom brothers and sisters: Gilbert of Bismarck, ND, Norman of Minneapolis, MN, Anna Mae Haas of Elgin, ND, Mary Weixal of West Fargo, ND, and Emy Beardsley of Cookeville, Tennessee. Preceding her in death is stepson James Nelson Kline of Annapolis, MD, sister Rose Alton of Jamestown, ND, and brothers Robert of Bismarck, ND and Henry of Kent, WA.
Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of her life on Thursday, July 14th, at 12:00 noon at Sherando Presbyterian Church, Stephens City, VA. Visitation will be held
one hour before the service. Viola will be laid to rest at Rosedale Cemetery next to her husband in Martinsburg, WV following a reception at the church.
Pallbearers will be Tommy and Christopher Stickley and the Presbyterian Men’s Group of the church. Memorials may be sent to the Sherando Presbyterian Church Local Mission Fund, 751 Fairfax Pike, Stephens City, VA 22655 in Viola’s memory.
