Susan Kay Walters Barnett departed this earth unexpectedly on July 10, 2024, at 69 years old due to an infection that had ultimately reached her heart. In fact, the final words used by the doctor to describe her heart were “enlarged and floppy”. If you knew Sue, you would agree that describing her heart to anyone as “enlarged and floppy” could not have been more accurate. She had such a vast heart for all people, and she loved those many people so well with a fierce and unmatched kindness.
Susie Q was born to George W. and Odell M. Walters in Baltimore, Maryland. She was a graduate of John Handley High school. She then married her rock and protector of 49 years David E. Barnett. Engulfing herself into the insurance industry for the next 37 years, she lived and breathed insurance and she took protecting people personally. Her career started at Industrial Risk Insurers of Richmond. She and Dave then moved back to the Winchester area, and she found employment with J.V. Arthur Insurance. It was there she would form a multitude of professional and personal relationships that have now outlived her earthly body. She retired in 2017 from the Winchester Group finishing out her proud career surrounded by numerous individuals with whom she first grew to know through JV Arthur. Her clients trusted her, and she took her job seriously. She was never more than a call away no matter the time of your pipe burst, fender bender or question.
Her marriage to Dave resulted in two children with whom she always referred to as her favorite daughter Alisa Barnett Spaid and her favorite son Brian E. Barnett (Amber). Susie also leaves behind her dear siblings Audrey Brown Bates (Chris), Billie Ann Layson, Judy Walters Cook (Mike), Sherry Walters (Tom), Bob Walters (Gina) and a brother-in-law Mark Barnett (Denise). She departs also leaving numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews of whom each knew they were her favorite as well.
Sue wore many hats professionally and personally. She civilly gave her time to Kiwanis of Old Towne and the Kids Club of the NSV. She was “Miss Mary Kay” of Winchester to many loyal customers. She always went above and beyond for her clients and if she was unable to deliver, she would send her resident product tester, Dave.
Of all the hats Sue wore there were two she wore most often and with the upmost pride. She became “Grammy” to Hayden E. Ricketts in 2006 and a “Gree” to Ainsley E. Spaid in 2015. Sue was beaming with excitement to also meet a new granddaughter coming this September. She cherished her grandchildren to no end. Where Gree was Ainsley was. Her “special love” she called her. Their bond was indeed special and so deep.
A visitation will be held on Thursday July 18, 2024, at 1pm with a memorial service to follow directly after at 2pm at the Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church of Winchester. Pastor Martha Miller Simms will officiate.
As a family we will miss that deep love she had for each of us. That fantastic smile, her fighting spirit, her complete and nurturing kindness for others and that floppy and enlarged heart that was so full of life and revere for each one of us.
We ask that any memorial contributions made in her honor go to Kiwanis of Old Towne, The Kids Clubs of the NSV, Shawnee Fire Department or Northwest Regional Educational Programs.
She was our sunshine our only sunshine, she made us happy when skies were gray, she’ll never know dear how much we loved her, please God keep sending the spirit of our sunshine our way. Forever.
