Mr. Stephen Charles Harriman
June 7, 1962 – June 1, 2014
Stephen Harriman, 51, died suddenly on June 1, 2014. As Steve wished, his body will be cremated and his ashes will remain with his wife in Radford, Virginia.
Steve was born on June 7, 1962 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Steve lived abroad and traveled extensively with his family until he went to boarding school on the big island of Hawaii in 1976. He attended R-MA beginning in 1979 and graduated in May 1982. He was an active athlete in football, wrestling and riflery. After graduating from Radford University with a Bachelor’s degree in History, Steve worked in the restaurant industry for a number of years before returning to Randolph-Macon Academy.
Steve started at R-MA as a Cadet Life Supervisor in the Upper School. He worked for three years in the Upper School and then worked two years as a Student Life Supervisor in the Middle School before returning back to the Upper School as an Upper School Activities Supervisor and then a Cadet Life Supervisor. Steve taught summer school each year and taught extra sessions of History in the Middle School. He also helped coach track, wrestling and football. Steve’s positive attitude and willingness to do whatever was needed was a true blessing.
Steve is survived by his wife Jane and two sons, Stephen Alexander and Christopher Brian; his parents Edward Nickerson Harriman, Jr. and Susan Record Harriman; his brother John and sister-in-law Barbara; his brother Andrew and sister-in-law Amy; his brother Christopher and sister-in-law Kimberly; his uncle and aunt Charles and Judith Balyeat; cousins Cathy, Russ, Jesse, and Amy Van Benthuysen; and nephews and nieces Zachary, Erica, Holly, Julia, Campbell, Erik, Evan, Ian, and Adelina.
A memorial service will be conducted at Boggs Chapel, Randolph Macon Academy’s Campus on Thursday June 5, 2014 at 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may to be made to the Stephen Harriman Scholarship Fund at Randolph-Macon Academy.
